Harry William Long age 91, of Cherryvale, passed away on December 26, 2016 at Golden Living Center in Edwardsville, KS.
Harry was born in Shamokin Dam, Pennsylvania on April 20, 1925 to Andrew and Mary (Roadaramel) Long. He attended local schools in Sunbury, PA until joining the United States Army where he proudly served during World War II. Harry was part of the Normandy Campaign earning four Bronze Battle Stars, a Silver Star Medal for Valor, and the three Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on September 27, 1945, while in Joplin Harry met Geraldine Cole and they started dating. The couple was married on February 16, 1946 in Independence, KS. To this union the couple was blessed with three children, and they made their home on a farm outside of Cherryvale. Harry was an avid Kansas State University Fan, he was a 4-H leader, a supporter of all Cherryvale Sports, he was a great bowler, an elder and usher of the Zion Lutheran church, and a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Those left to honor his memory are, his wife of 70 years, Geraldine, son Steve Long his wife Dixie, daughters, Pam Dodson her husband Bob, Joyce Goethals her husband Randy, sister Irene Thomas her husband Dave, 20 grandchildren and spouses, and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ray and Andrew Long, sisters Catherine Dockey, Ruth Hess, and Blanche Offinger, son-in-law Ron Altendorf, and granddaughter-in-law Stacie Long.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 10:00am at Zion Lutheran Church in Independence with Reverend Roland Vega officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Dale Cemetery in Cherryvale. Friends are invited to sign the register and greet the family on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Potts Chapel in Cherryvale from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Zion Lutheran School and they may be left in care of the Chapel.
