John O. Ellis, 69 of Cherryvale, passed away the morning of Thursday, February 18, 2021. John was born on January 3, 1952, to Lewis and Mabel (Pilkington) Ellis in Independence, Kansas. As a young boy, John grew up and attended school in Cherryvale, Kansas. John worked in the oil field and construction for many years. In 2000, John along with Bill Haselwood started the Charger Merchants baseball program that provided area youth the opportunity to participate in a traveling league, which included 3 trips to the state tournament. John was a foster parent for 42 years, fostering over 125 children. He was also an educational advocate for many children. John and his wife Marguerita enjoyed riding motorcycles and took many trips together. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, riding horses, working with his animals and other farming jobs around the house. John loved watching football and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his wife and family.
On August 11, 2004, John, and wife Marguerita were married in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home. Survivors include: Six sons- Dustin Ellis, of Cherryvale, Kansas, C.J. Ellis and wife Christina of Pittsburg, Kansas, Levi Ellis of Neodesha, Kansas, Justin Pate and Hannah of Erwin, Tennessee, Tim Johnson and wife Nicole of Cherryvale, Kansas, and Josh Truman of Cherryvale, Kansas. Grandchildren- Matthew, Jonathan, Colton, Cooper, Timmy, Cody, and Ashli. Great grandchildren- Averi Johnson; Siblings – Sister Marvelle Ellis of Cherryvale, Kansas, and brother Duncan Ellis of Wichita, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at Potts Chapel, Cherryvale, Kansas. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery, Cherryvale. Visitation will be at Potts Chapel, Cherryvale Tuesday, February 23, 2021 from 5-7 p.m. Friends may leave online condolences at www.pottsfuneralhome.com
