Joyce N. Akins, 64, of El Dorado, Kansas formally of Cherryvale, passed away Monday, March 7, 2016 at the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado, Kansas.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the Potts Chapel Cherryvale. Friends may sign the book from 8:00 a.m. to service time on Saturday with the Reverend Darren Melton of the First Church of Nazarene officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale under the direction of the Potts Chapel.
The family has suggested memorials to the SBA Cancer Center in El Dorado, Kansas and contributions may be left at the Potts Chapel in Cherryvale.
Joyce was born July 7, 1951 in Independence, Kansas the daughter of Robert and Virgina (Wilson) Shepard. She grew up in Cherryvale and graduated from the Cherryvale School System. She then attended Pittsburg State University and received her teaching degree. Later she attended the Southwest College in Winfield, Kansas and got her master's degree.
Joyce was a teacher for the special Ed program for the Butler County Special Education Coop.
She was a member of the National Education Association.
Survivors include her mother Virgina Shepard of Coffeyville, Ks. Two daughters Melinda Smith of Wichita and Denise Garland of
Burlington, Ks. One brother Robert Shepard of Coffeyville, Ks. And her extended family Debi Chadwick and Phyllis Ailey both of El Dorado, Ks. She has five grandchildren.
Joyce was preceded in death by her father Robert Shepard.
